Lecturer: Fashion Design (Design&Technical Lead) .
This role requires a strong fashion design academic with advanced capability in garment technology, pattern making, and product realisation, able to lead students from conceptual design through to resolved garment outcomes and range development.
Core Purpose To provide
academic leadership across undergraduate fashion programmes , integrating:
Fashion Design Development
Garment Technology and Construction
Pattern Making and Pattern Engineering
Textile Knowledge and Fabric Application
Technical Drawing and Specification
Range Planning and Product Development
The role centres on enabling students to
translate concept into product , balancing
design intent, technical execution, and industry relevance .
Core Functions The successful candidate will:
Deliver lectures (face-to-face and online) across design and technical modules
Lead teaching in fashion design development, ensuring strong conceptual grounding and visual communication
Integrate pattern making and garment construction into the design process
Guide students in translating design concepts into technically resolved garments
Support range planning and product development, aligned to industry expectations
Maintain and develop teaching and learning materials across modules
Design, assess, and moderate assessments aligned to exit-level standards
Provide clear, critical, and developmental feedback to support student progression
Contribute to curriculum development and refinement, ensuring alignment with industry and academic standards
Monitor and manage student academic performance
Engage with industry to support relevance, partnerships, and employability outcomes
Participate in academic administration and quality assurance processes
Provide academic mentorship and support
Qualifications
Minimum
NQF Level 8 postgraduate qualification
in Fashion Design or related field
A Master’s degree is advantageous
Experiences
Experience lecturing in a
higher education environment
Minimum
3+ years industry experience
in fashion design and/or product development
Strong capability in fashion design development and visual communication
Advanced pattern making and garment construction skills (portfolio required)
Strong understanding of textiles and material application
Proficiency in technical drawing and garment specification
Ability to support range planning and collection development
Ability to move between conceptual, visual and technical modes of thinking
Strong research capability (conceptual, trend, applied)
Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills
Strong communication and interpersonal ability
Experience with blended and online learning environments
Strong assessment design and moderation capability
Ability to deliver engaging, level-appropriate teaching
Effective student engagement and academic support practices
Strong administrative and organisational skills
Ability to apply diverse and inclusive pedagogical approaches
Alignment with academic quality assurance standards
Technical&Digital Skills
Proficiency in:
Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
Google Workspace
