Job Summary We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the design, coordination, and delivery of mechanical building services projects across healthcare facilities, commercial developments, retail environments, and other large-scale infrastructure projects.
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing multiple projects simultaneously, leading a mechanical engineering team, ensuring compliance with applicable South African standards and statutory regulations, and delivering high-quality, safe, efficient, and commercially sound engineering solutions. The role requires strong technical leadership, project management capability, and extensive experience within a multidisciplinary consulting engineering environment.
Key Responsibilities Project Leadership and Management
Lead and manage complex multidisciplinary building services projects from feasibility stage through to commissioning and project close‑out.
Coordinate closely with architects, civil engineers, structural engineers, electrical engineers, and quantity surveyors to ensure successful project integration.
Manage client briefs, project scope, budgets, timelines, risks, and deliverables.
Serve as the primary technical point of contact for clients, contractors, and relevant local authorities.
Ensure BVi design standards, technical specifications, and drawing quality are consistently maintained.
Manage installation quality and ensure client expectations are met throughout all project phases.
Provide technical guidance and strategic input to clients, project teams, and internal stakeholders.
Mentor and supervise junior engineers, technologists, and draughtspersons within the mechanical discipline.
Design and Technical Leadership Lead the design, review, and coordination of mechanical building services, including but not limited to:
HVAC systems
Wet services (water supply and drainage systems)
Fire protection systems
Medical gas and LPG systems
Vertical transportation systems, including lifts and escalators
Additional responsibilities include:
Ensuring all designs comply with relevant South African National Standards (SANS), regulations, and industry best practices.
Preparing and reviewing detailed engineering designs, calculations, specifications, and technical documentation.
Preparing tender documentation, construction drawings, and technical reports.
Undertaking concept development and feasibility studies for proposed projects.
Construction and Contract Administration Provide technical leadership during construction and contract implementation, including:
Conducting site inspections and progress reviews.
Reviewing shop drawings and contractor technical submissions.
Issuing site instructions and technical clarifications to contractors and subcontractors.
Managing project financial administration, including:
Payment valuations
Evaluation and approval of variation orders
Monthly cost reporting
Final account preparation
Oversee commissioning and handover processes, including:
Testing and commissioning of mechanical systems.
Ensuring training is provided to client facility management teams.
Reviewing and approving as‑built drawings.
Reviewing and approving operation and maintenance manuals.
Preparing and issuing close‑out reports.
Compliance, Quality Assurance and Safety
Ensure all designs and installations comply with SANS codes, statutory requirements, and recognised industry standards.
Manage and implement QA/QC procedures and project risk management processes.
Review and issue monthly inspection reports.
Liaise with local authorities regarding final inspections, approvals, and compliance requirements where applicable.
Minimum Requirements Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (BEng or BSc Eng).
Registered as a Professional Engineer (PrEng) with ECSA.
Experience
Minimum 8–12 years’ relevant experience in mechanical engineering within the built environment.
Proven track record in healthcare facilities, hospitals, clinics, commercial developments, and mixed‑use projects.
Demonstrated experience leading mechanical teams on multidisciplinary consulting engineering projects.
Strong technical expertise in healthcare mechanical systems, particularly:
Medical gas systems
Compressed air systems
LPG installations
Hot water systems
Extensive experience in HVAC design for large buildings, including Building Management Systems (BMS).
Key Skills and Competencies
Strong leadership and project management capability.
Advanced knowledge of South African engineering codes and standards.
Excellent coordination, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
Proficiency in:
HAP load calculation software
Microsoft Office
AutoCAD / Autodesk Revit
Strong technical report writing and documentation skills.
Ability to manage multiple projects under pressure while maintaining quality and deadlines.
Commercial awareness, including project fee control and resource planning.
Preferred Attributes
Experience within a South African consulting engineering environment.
Familiarity with Green Building Council South Africa standards, including Green Star SA.
Experience in commissioning healthcare facilities.
Sound knowledge of energy efficiency requirements and SANS 10400‑XA compliance.
Understanding of fire engineering, fire protection systems, wet services, HVAC-related international standards and codes, including:
