Description
Durban North | Up to R70,000 per month | Hybrid working
I’m working with a global technology leader in smart metering and utility solutions, delivering products across international markets. They’re continuing to invest heavily in their next generation of electricity and water metering products, alongside a new handheld customer interface and major data-focused initiatives planned for 2026.
They’re now looking to bring in a mid-to-senior level Embedded Engineer to join a growing team and play a key role in bringing more of their core engineering capability in-house.
The Role This is an end-to-end engineering role where you’ll be involved across the full product lifecycle, from design through to release and ongoing optimisation.
You’ll be working on:
Next-gen metering products (electricity&water)
A handheld interface device
Connectivity solutions using 4G and NB-IoT technologies
A large-scale data collection and analytics platform project
Day-to-day, you’ll:
Design and develop embedded firmware aligned to product requirements
Work closely with hardware, ensuring tight firmware/electronics integration
Handle debugging across multiple devices and systems
Contribute to architecture, testing, validation, and release processes
Get involved in real-world problem solving, failure analysis, and optimisation
Work directly with a small, highly focused engineering team
What They’re Looking For (Non-Negotiables)
Strong experience in
embedded C/C++ firmware development
Solid understanding of
electronics
Required Experience
Working with ARM-based microcontrollers
Experience using logic analysers and similar tools
Familiarity with Git / version control and DevOps practices
Ability to operate across the full engineering lifecycle
The Team&Environment You’ll initially be working closely with the hiring manager and a small number of contractors, with a clear plan to bring core engineering fully in-house.
They’re looking for someone who:
Is a self-starter
Takes ownership and drives work forward
Is comfortable in a hands-on, delivery-focused environment
Working Setup
Office-based with flexibility to work remotely a couple of days when things are quieter
Output-focused environment, no micromanagement or clock-watching
Strong emphasis on trust, delivery, and autonomy
