We are seeking an experienced Principal Investment Risk Manager for our Equity Equivalent Investment Program (EEIP) to join our team and shape the future of development financing in the region. This position blends strategic thinking with practical execution, ensuring investments in small businesses create lasting positive impact while maintaining robust risk management standards.

As the Principal Investment Risk Manager, EEIP, you will be at the intersection of AWS's business strategy and our B-BBEE initiatives. Your expertise will help safeguard investments while maximizing transformative potential. You will work with senior internal leadership and external partners to shape the risk management framework that underpins investments in small and medium enterprises.

Key responsibilities

Risk strategy and oversight: Develop and implement comprehensive risk management strategies that protect investments while supporting program objectives. This includes conducting thorough risk assessments, developing risk mitigation strategies, and ensuring alignment with international financial reporting standards and local transformation and other regulatory requirements.

Investment analysis and management: Evaluate and monitor private market investments. Oversee financial analyses conducted by fund managers, conduct stress testing, and provide strategic insights that inform investment decisions. This includes oversight of Fund Managers, Private Equity, and Private Debt strategies.

Stakeholder management: Build and maintain relationships with internal teams, external funders, and investee companies. Communicate complex risk concepts clearly and influence decision-making at senior levels.

Innovation and development: Stay ahead of industry trends and regulatory changes, continuously improving risk management approaches and adapting them to meet challenges in the B-BBEE and private equity landscapes.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or related field

Advanced credentials such as CFA, CIMA, or FRM

Experience in private markets, including risk management and mitigation strategies in fund management; working knowledge of various asset classes and fund structures; demonstrated track record of progressive responsibility and measurable impact.

Preferred Qualifications

Strong background in financial modelling and investment analysis

Comprehensive knowledge of the South African and Sub-Saharan African private equity landscape

Takes ownership of complex initiatives and delivers results

Demonstrates consistently high judgment in high-stakes decisions

Builds strong relationships across organizational and external stakeholder boundaries

Communicates with clarity and impact at all levels
