Production Supervisor, Johannesburg

Lead the Shift Packaging and Processing Teams by coordinating the safe 

and consistent packaging of products according to the necessary quality 

specifications, delivery, cost and productivity requirements across 

multiple processing and packaging lines. 

Reports To: Line Owner 

 

Key Responsibilities: Manage Line Productivity 

• Ensure that the production lines are checked and safe for 

production. 

• Check that all emergencies stop buttons work and that all safety 

covers are in place, and report to Maintenance Owner and Line 

Owner immediately. 

• Owns the centerline management department. 

• Leads the process to identify Centerline targets and document 

standards 

• Develop control strategies to enable operators to respond to out

of-control situations 

• Coach Operators on centerline execution and problem-solving 

skills 

• Analyzes line data to identify and prioritize loss elimination 

opportunities 

• Leads root cause problem solving efforts on key chronic losses 

for the line or cell. 

• Facilitate line loss analysis. 

• Improve line productivity by reviewing daily production data and 

formulating action plans to improve performance. 

 

Manage Production Processes 

 

• Ensure that all ingredients are in place and all mixers, Hoppers 

and other equipment on the line are cleaned and sanitized. 

• Ensure that all the Raw materials are in place for the days 

production. 

• Ensure that all associates has the correct PPE. 

• Allocates all necessary production work-in -progress and input 

raw materials 

• Ensure strict compliance with all recipes. 

• Monitors all mixes temperature during production 

• Ensure all specifications are adhered to on all production lines. 

• Ensure products packed on shift meet the necessary quality 

specifications.

Shift Production Supervisor 

• Ensure strict adherence to the Master Cleaning Schedule and 

that associates are following the prescribed cleaning SOP's. 

• Execute tactical planning and scheduling to meet packaging 

timelines according to systemized production schedule as well as 

working closely with the Planning department. 

• Track usage variances (on shift) on key packaging components 

and bulk raw materials. 

• Ensure GMP, FSSC 22 000 & ISO standards are always 

maintained by reviewing and updating relevant Risk 

Assessments. 

• Ensure 6 S methodology is maintained and take corrective action 

when non-compliances are noted. 

• Oversee line opening, clearance and closing and final approval of 

Master Packaging & Processing Documents. 

• Address all process non-conformances with the necessary 

corrective and preventative actions. 

• Completion of Shift Production Reports. 

• Ensure adequate preparation for incoming shift (raw materials, 

batch preparation and packaging). 

• Ensure compliance with SAP Production Processes (stock receipt, 

stock transfer, usage consumptions & closing orders) 

 

Lead Team 

 

• Overseeing Operator activities 

• Ensure that all production lines are running at full capacity 

• Ensure that all waste and machine downtime are recorded 

• Ensure that all associates always adhere to plant rules 

• Ensure proper housekeeping during production 

• Coach and mentor sub-ordinates during their daily tasks 

• Participate in the waste reduction plan and drive all initiatives. 

• Lead daily or shift team meetings (Level 1). 

• Set objectives and manage performance of team members. 

• Ensure optimal utilization of staff across multiple lines (dynamic 

resourcing). 

• Apply consistent discipline and fairness to direct reports. 

• Train and develop staff (multi-skilling and succession planning). 

• Conduct daily team meetings and ensure effective 

communication with all. 

• Liaise with management from other departments.

• Control working hours and overtime for associates on shift. 

• Ensure hot seat shift change overs 

• Ensure that no associate exceed the legal limit of 40 Hours 

overtime per month. 

• Resolve conflict within the team. 

• Eliminate or reduce unplanned stops by close collaboration with 

Quality and Engineering Team's. 

• Lead TPM process for shift and follow prescribed methodologies 

to drive continuous improvement. 

• Ensure High Level of Engineering Availability 

• Work with Maintenance Owner to identify opportunities to 

improve overall performance. 

• Generate breakdown job cards for engineering team to action 

accordingly. 

• Coordinate 1st Line Maintenance activities for Production 

Operators with Maintenance Planning Team.                                                                                                                             

 

Create a Safe Operating Environment 

• Manage EHS activities in department. 

• Conduct Risk assessments on all activities in department. 

• Work with Line Owners to update Standard Operating Procedures 

(SOP's) on an annual basis or when the process changes.  

• Conduct PJO's (Planned Job Observations) for all team members 

in department. 

• Collate near misses that occur during the shift and report back to 

SHE sub-committee. 

 

Experience & Education: • Production Management Degree or Diploma or Technical 

equivalent 

• 5 - 10 years' experience as a Production Controller or equivalent 

in a Food Manufacturing Facility. 

• 3 - 5 Year experience with conducting RCA or Problem Solving. 

• 3 - 5 Year experience leading a Production Team. 

• 3 - 5 Year experience using TPM or WCM Methodologies to drive 

Continuous Improvement.
