PostgreSQL Database Administrator, Johannesburg

Are you a meticulous and experienced PostgreSQL expert with a passion for performance, security, and data integrity? A forward-thinking technology firm is seeking a PostgreSQL Database Administrator to join their growing team and help scale, maintain, and optimize mission-critical databases that support enterprise-grade applications.

Manage, monitor, and maintain PostgreSQL environments (community and enterprise editions).

Design and optimize database architecture, replication, HA, and backup solutions.

Troubleshoot performance issues and conduct tuning and root‑cause analysis across large‑scale environments.

Lead Oracle‑to‑PostgreSQL migration projects and ensure compatibility across platforms.

Collaborate with DevOps, development, and infrastructure teams for seamless database integration.

Enforce security policies, access controls, and best practices.

Provide Tier 1 to Tier 3 support to internal teams and external clients.

Create documentation, build knowledge bases, and mentor junior DBAs.

Participate in on‑call rotations and provide after‑hours support when needed.

Support technical pre‑sales and client solution architecture as required.

Qualifications:

5–8 years of hands‑on DBA experience, with a minimum of 3 years focused specifically on PostgreSQL.

In‑depth experience with enterprise‑grade PostgreSQL platforms and tools.

Strong advantage: Background in Oracle Database administration or migrations.

Proven expertise in:

Performance tuning and optimization.

Backup and recovery strategies.

Replication (streaming and logical).

Proficient in Linux command‑line operations and scripting (e.g., Bash, Python).

Experience with PostgreSQL monitoring and diagnostic tools such as pg_stat_statements, Prometheus, pgBadger, etc.

Familiarity with cloud environments (AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) is a plus.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to work independently and take initiative in high‑pressure environments.
