Industrial Designer, Johannesburg

Design, develop, integrate, and qualify products and systems from concept and specification through design qualification, industrialisation, production support, and deployment. Contribute to the improvement and industrialisation of existing and new products to ensure ergonomics, performance, manufacturability, cost efficiency, and compliance with international standards.

Design and develop new products and product systems

Investigate and resolve issues related to current and new product designs

Improve and optimise existing product designs to reduce manufacturing costs and improve production efficiency

Develop and maintain product specifications and qualification documentation

CAD configuration and illustration development for assembly instructions and other support documentation

Development of Bill of Materials (BOM)

Test instructions as required

Liaise with Chinese and local suppliers to ensure products meet technical and manufacturing requirements

Support with tooling verification and product industrialisation activities with local and international suppliers

Verify that products are manufactured according to design intent and specification

Provide technical support during manufacturing and production processes

Conduct product testing and qualification against international standards

Supporting reporting, product traceability, and manufacturing documentation requirements

Maintain ISO:9001 documentation and process compliance: accurate drawing control and document management

Product Development and Deployment

Cross-functional collaboration with management and R&D teams to define:

Timescales and project deliverables

Product and documentation configuration

Product budget support and manufacturing feasibility

Assist R&D teams with technical support:

In-house production implementation

Third-party manufacturing integration

Manufacturing support and troubleshooting

Field support and product improvement initiatives

Applying Human-Centred Design (HCD) and Ergonomic design principles throughout product development

Execute conceptualisation and problem-solving across various design criteria

Produce efficient and practical designs balancing simplicity, feasibility, cost efficiency, accuracy, and manufacturability

Technical&Manufacturing Experience

Experience in designing for and supporting various manufacturing methods, including, but not limited to:

Plastic fabrication

Injection moulding

Sheet metal fabrication

Extrusion

Additive manufacturing/3D Printing

Physical prototyping and validation testing

3D printing technologies and rapid prototyping workflows

Design for Manufacture (DfM) and Assembly (DfMA) methodologies

Basic mechanical and thermal simulation analysis

Basic graphic design and product photography knowledge (Advantageous)

Basic electrical and electronic knowledge (Advantageous)

Software&Technical Skills

SolidWorks (Non-negotiable): CAD conceptualisation and technical drafting

Required: Advanced part modelling, assemblies, surfacing, sheet metal

Advantageous, but not required: Electrical routing, basic flow simulation, PDM

CorelDRAW: technical layouts, graphic support, and documentation support

KeyShot (Advantageous): product rendering and animation

Microsoft Office Suite (Non-negotiable): documentation, reporting, presentations, data management

Sketching, concept drawing, technical hand-rendering, and 3D presentation rendering.

Administration and Reporting

General correspondence and administration completed accurately and timeously.

Email, inbox and data managed timeously and effectively.

Professional image maintained in all communication.

All reporting and feedback requirements met, and reports completed accurately and timeously, according to company requirements.

Drafting, maintaining and ensure adherence to departmental processes and standard operating procedures.

Qualifications&Experience Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design, Product Design Engineering, or Industrial Design Engineering

3+ years’ experience in Industrial Design, product development, or industrial design engineering environments

Experience working within engineering-driven product development and manufacturing environments

Strong understanding of Industrial Design Engineering methodologies and production support systems

Portfolio of previous work will be required.
