About You As Assistant Stock Control Manager, you’re the type who treats stock integrity like a personal mission. Whether it’s FMCG, tech, imports, or apparel, you’ve got a sharp eye for detail and a “nothing slips through the cracks” mindset. You’re just as comfortable rolling up your sleeves on the warehouse floor as you are steppingback to rethink layouts, streamline SOPs, and level up how the whole operation runs. Bonus points if you enjoy turning chaos into calm, mentoring a team to bring their A‑game, and finding smarter, faster, better ways to get things done while keeping the shelves and standards fully stocked.
Responsibilities Management Deputisation&Strategic Contribution
Act as the primary stand‑in for the Stock Control Manager in their absence, assuming full operational authority over the department.
Assist in the development, review and implementation of warehouse SOPs, policies and best practices.
Contribute to flagging inefficiencies to the Stock Control Manager.
Support cross‑departmental coordination with procurement, logistics, and finance teams as required.
Stock Management&Category Oversight
Maintain full accountability for the accurate receiving, processing and storage of all inbound stock across imports, FMCG, technology and apparel.
Enforce stock classification, labelling and system capturing standards across all categories.
Drive regular cycle counts, stock reconciliations and variance investigations, reporting outcomes to the Stock Control Manager.
Implement and uphold category‑specific handling protocols, including FMCG compliance requirements, security procedures for technology products and garment care standards for apparel.
Identify systemic stock control issues and propose corrective measures proactively.
Receiving&Inbound Logistics
Oversee and take final responsibility for the end‑to‑end receiving process for all inbound shipments, including imports and local deliveries.
Ensure accuracy of import documentation including purchase orders, packing lists and customs clearance records.
Coordinate with the Senior Processing Clerk to maintain consistent processing turnaround times.
Review and continuously improve receiving SOPs in line with operational demands and regulatory requirements.
Warehouse Layout&Pallet Management
Take ownership of warehouse floor layout design and ongoing optimisation to maximise space utilisation and operational efficiency.
Manage pallet allocations and alignment across all product zones, ensuring logical categorisation by stock type, velocity and storage requirements.
Proactively review and adjust layout configurations in response to changes in volume, new product ranges or business requirements.
Ensure all layout arrangements comply with health, safety and fire regulations.
Maintain clearly demarcated aisles, zones and pallet locations at all times.
People Management&Team Development
Take ownership of managing and developing warehouse floor staff, including the capacity to step in and perform any role within the operation as circumstances demand.
Provide ongoing coaching and mentorship to develop team capability.
Initiate and manage disciplinary processes where required, in line with company policy and labour legislation.
Conduct daily team briefings to communicate targets, operational priorities and procedural updates.
Foster a high‑performance culture grounded in accountability, accuracy and continuous improvement.
Reporting&KPI Accountability
Monitor and report on key warehouse performance indicators including receiving accuracy, processing turnaround times, stock discrepancy rates and space utilisation.
Prepare and present operational reports for the Stock Control Manager on a regular basis.
Identify trends, risks and opportunities within warehouse operations and escalates or actions accordingly.
Experience and Qualifications
Matric / Grade 12 (essential).
Relevant tertiary qualification in Logistics, Supply Chain or Warehouse Management (essential).
Forklift licence (advantageous).
At least 3‑5 years of experience in a warehouse or stock control environment.
At least 2–3 years in a supervisory or team leadership capacity.
Demonstrated experience managing multiple product categories including imports, FMCG, technology and/or apparel.
Proven experience in warehouse layout planning, pallet management and space optimisation.
Prior involvement in SOP development or process improvement initiatives.
Experience managing staff performance, including performance reviews and disciplinary processes.
Strong leadership and people management skills with the ability to develop others.
High level of accountability and the ability to make sound operational decisions independently.
Excellent organisational and planning ability across multiple priorities.
Working knowledge of Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) or stock control software and advanced Excel skills.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to report upward and lead downward effectively.
Sound understanding of health, safety and labour regulations applicable to a warehouse environment.
Ability to remain composed and decisive under pressure in a fast‑paced, high‑volume environment.
