The outcomeof such an assessment may have an impact upon possible employment with the University.The Department of Chemical Sciences is an academic unit within the Faculty of Science. The core functions of the departmentare teaching,training,andresearch.ThedepartmentissituatedonboththeAPKCampusinAucklandPark,and the DFC campus inJohannesburg. Responsibilities: Beactivelyinvolvedincoreactivitiesofthedepartmentsuchasteaching(generalandorganicchemistry), research, academic administration, short-course development, marketing, and community projects.Assumeresponsibilitytoteachmodules(theoryand/orpractical)enlistedfortheChemistryundergraduate programme in the Department. Theincumbentwillalsobeexpectedtoparticipateincurriculumdevelopmentandteachmodulesinpostgraduate programmes. Annuallypublishpeer-reviewedpapersinaccreditedscientificand/oracademicjournals,anddeliverpapersat national and international conferences, commensurate with the level of appointment.Obtainresearchfundingfromexternalfunding bodies. PhDinChemistryor equivalent. Musthaveteachingexperienceatundergraduate level. Thecandidatemustbeabletoteachorganicchemistryatalllevelsandhavesustained,significantresearch outputs in ISI accredited journals. Evidenceofcommunityand/orindustrialinvolvementwouldbe beneficial.Soundcommunicationskillsin English. Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:
Excellentteaching skills. Abilitytoapplyrelevantskillsinaddressing chemistry problems. Abilitytoworkunderpressureandmeettight deadlines. Stronginterpersonalrelationshipsaswellastheabilitytocollaboratewith colleagues. Recommendations:
Teachingexperience,ataHigherEducationInstitutionwillbeanadded advantage. Atrackrecordofpost-graduateresearchsupervisionwillbeanadded advantage. Shouldfitwiththecurrentresearchthrustsofthedepartment(Catalysis,Medicinalchemistry,Materials chemistry,Water treatment and purification).
