Description
Role Purpose Lead the electrical engineering discipline for complex nuclear and high‑impact infrastructure projects on a contract basis in Manchester. Key responsibilities include:
Take full ownership of the electrical engineering discipline across project delivery
Ensure all electrical engineering deliverables meet regulatory, safety, and technical standards
Lead and manage an electrical engineering team to deliver work on time and within budget
Provide technical authority and assurance across all electrical design activities
Job Role Responsibilities
Full ownership of electrical scope delivery, including:
Schedule development
MDR (Master Deliverables Register) creation
Change control management
Project reporting
Leading technical meetings
Allocation and delegation of work to the electrical team
Support project estimates, including preparation of CTRs (Cost Time Resource estimates)
Provide electrical discipline technical input, including preparation, checking and approval of:
Basis of Design documentation
Power system calculations
Earthing and lightning protection studies
Equipment sizing calculations
Load schedules
Equipment specifications and datasheets
Single Line Diagrams (SLDs)
Cable schedules
Material take‑offs
Block cable diagrams (BCDs)
Schematics
Equipment layouts and cable routing drawings
Prepare requisitions for electrical equipment, including:
HV and LV switchboards
Transformers
Motors
UPS systems
Power factor correction equipment
Trace heating and lighting systems
Review supplier quotations and produce technical bid evaluations:
Define installation scopes of work
Ensure compliance with national and international codes and standards, relevant legislation, and company engineering procedures
Undertake specialist activities, including:
HV power system modelling
HV protection studies
Liaising with DNOs and external stakeholders
Electrical equipment ageing and obsolescence management
Supporting site teams with operational issues
Experience / Skills / Knowledge / Qualifications
Degree in a relevant engineering discipline (Electrical, Electronic or Control Engineering) (Apprenticeships may also be considered)
Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status, or working towards professional accreditation
Strong understanding of electrical design practices and installation requirements
15+ years’ engineering experience within nuclear or similar sectors
In‑depth knowledge of UK legislation, regulations, and engineering standards
Experience working in hazardous or potentially explosive environments
Knowledge of CE marking requirements, including:
ATEX
PED (Pressure Equipment Directive)
Low Voltage Directive
Machinery Directive
EMC Compliance
Strong understanding of:
Risk identification, quantification and mitigation
Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) requirements
Highly motivated with strong communication skills
Experience managing and leading electrical engineering teams
Proven ability to deliver projects on schedule and budget
Strong safety and risk management mindset
Note: Recent electrical engineering experience within the nuclear sector is essential.
