Systems Programmer– z/OS System Support (Mainframe Sysprog), Pretoria

We are seeking an experienced Mainframe Systems Engineer / zOS Specialist to join a customer environment based in Brooklyn, Pretoria.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day operation, implementation, configuration, and maintenance of the Mainframe infrastructure, including z hardware and z/OS software environments. The role requires strong technical expertise across Mainframe systems administration, third-party product support, storage management, disaster recovery, and business continuity activities.

This position works closely with multiple engineering teams to support the integrated Mainframe ecosystem and ensure stability, performance, and operational excellence across the environment.

Responsibilities Mainframe Operations&Administration

Manage the day-to-day operation and support of the Mainframe environment

Implement, configure, maintain, and support z hardware and z/OS software

Perform system monitoring, troubleshooting, tuning, and performance management

Support Mainframe operational stability, availability, and resilience

Installation, Upgrades&Lifecycle Management

Perform z/OS software installations, upgrades, patching, and maintenance

Install, configure, and maintain third-party z/OS program products

Manage software lifecycle activities and environment optimisation

Support Research&Development initiatives relating to Mainframe technologies

Storage, Network&Systems Management

Administer storage management environments including DFSMS and DFSMShsm

Support Mainframe network management and TCP/IP configuration

Manage system resources, storage allocation, backup, and recovery activities

Support HCD configuration and Mainframe hardware definitions

Disaster Recovery&Business Continuity

Participate in Disaster Recovery planning, testing, and execution activities

Support Business Continuity initiatives and operational readiness processes

Ensure Mainframe environments align with operational recovery standards and procedures

Collaboration&Engineering Support

Work closely with multiple engineering and infrastructure teams

Support integrated enterprise solutions delivered through the Mainframe platform

Participate in technical problem-solving, change implementation, and operational planning

Qualifications Essential Technical Skills

Strong experience supporting z/OS Operating Systems and related subsystems

Experience with:

HCD

TCP/IP

SMP/E

RMF

CICS

MQ

Experience installing and configuring third-party z/OS products

Strong understanding of Storage Management environments

Experience with DFSMS and DFSMShsm

Experience with BMC Control Products

Additional Requirements

Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills

Ability to work within highly technical enterprise environments

Experience supporting operational stability, upgrades, and DR activities

Strong collaboration and communication skills

Preferred Experience

Experience within enterprise or financial services environments

Exposure to large-scale Mainframe infrastructure environments

Experience participating in business continuity and disaster recovery exercises
