Purpose of the Role
The Programme Coordinator and Lecturer is a pivotal role that combines academic leadership, programme management, and teaching excellence. The incumbent will be responsible for delivering high-quality, innovative education, developing and coordinating the Bachelor of Arts in Disaster and Safety Management and the Higher Certificate in Incident Management, and actively participating in academic governance as directed by the Head of Faculty and/or Chief Academic Officer.
This position requires the development and delivery of curricula that meet regulatory requirements, align with industry standards, and support the institution's commitment to academic excellence. The role involves overseeing the efficient delivery of programmes, fostering continuous improvement, and ensuring compliance with accreditation bodies and institutional policies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Programme Coordination (20%)
• Lead the design, development, and review of programmes to ensure alignment with the Higher Education Qualifications Framework (HEQF) and Council on Higher Education (CHE) standards.
• Conduct regular reviews to evaluate programme quality, relevance, and effectiveness, implementing improvements based on stakeholder feedback and student outcomes.
• Engage internal and external stakeholders to maintain programme relevance and foster partnerships that enhance the value and recognition of the programmes.
• Oversee student recruitment, admission, and selection processes, ensuring compliance with institutional equity, diversity, and access policies.
• Coordinate the delivery and management of programmes to ensure operational efficiency, academic coherence, and industry relevance.
Teaching, Learning, Academic Support, and Content Development (25%)
• Develop and deliver engaging, multimedia-rich course materials and assessments tailored for both in-person and distance learning environments.
• Deliver high-quality lectures, seminars, and tutorials that blend theoretical knowledge with practical applications, employing diverse teaching methodologies.
• Lead the design and development of industry-relevant course content aligned with programme objectives, regularly updated to reflect advancements in the discipline.
• Provide academic support through individual consultations and group sessions; dedicate a minimum of 5 hours per week to the Writing Centre.
• Design robust assessments aligned with programme learning outcomes and provide constructive, actionable feedback to support continuous student improvement.
Regulatory Compliance (5%)
• Ensure programmes meet the standards and requirements of the CHE, DHET, and other relevant regulatory bodies.
• Stay updated on changes in higher education regulations and implement necessary adjustments to programme design and operations.
• Prepare and submit accurate documentation, reports, and records to meet regulatory and institutional standards.
General Academic Administration (15%)
• Maintain accurate and secure records of student grades, attendance, and programme activities in compliance with institutional policies.
• Facilitate student registration and verify student eligibility for graduation in collaboration with administrative staff.
• Collaborate with administrative staff to manage scheduling, assessments, and resource allocation for seamless programme delivery.
Research (5%)
• Conduct and publish high-quality research in Disaster and Safety Management, contributing to the advancement of knowledge.
• Integrate the latest research findings into curriculum design and teaching methodologies.
• Supervise postgraduate and undergraduate research projects, providing mentorship through all stages from proposal to final submission.
Training and Professional Development (5%)
• Participate in ongoing professional development activities, including workshops, conferences, and seminars.
• Identify the professional development needs of academic staff and design training sessions to address them.
• Foster a culture of continuous learning and professional growth within the academic community.
Leadership, Academic Governance, and Faculty Management (5%)
• Actively participate in faculty and institutional governance committees, including curriculum review panels and academic boards.
• Collaborate with the Head of Faculty to develop and implement strategic plans aligning faculty initiatives with institutional priorities.
• Provide academic leadership to faculty members, fostering collaboration, excellence, and continuous improvement.
Student Engagement and Support (5%)
• Foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment that promotes student engagement, participation, and academic success.
• Proactively identify at-risk students and implement targeted interventions to support their academic progress and retention.
• Provide students with advice and resources related to career planning, employability skills, and further study opportunities.
Independent Contractor / Sessional Lecturer Management (10%)
• Lead the recruitment and selection of qualified ICs and sessional lecturers, ensuring candidates meet institutional academic standards.
• Provide comprehensive onboarding and training to align ICs with teaching standards, curriculum objectives, and distance learning best practices.
• Monitor IC performance through regular evaluations and student feedback, addressing performance concerns promptly.
Examination and Assessment Management (5%)
• Plan, manage, and oversee all assessments and examinations for assigned programmes, ensuring alignment with the academic calendar.
• Ensure the integrity and security of the examination process and oversee internal and external moderation.
• Compile assessment reports and use data to inform programme reviews, curriculum adjustments, and teaching strategies.
Requirements
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
• A minimum of a Master's degree in Disaster and Safety Management or a closely related field, with a proven record establishing the candidate as a subject matter expert.
• A PhD in the relevant field will be advantageous.
Experience
• Minimum of 1 to 3 years' lecturing experience in higher education, specifically in Disaster and Safety Management, Incident Management, or related fields.
• Proven experience in academic leadership and programme coordination.
• Experience in curriculum development and alignment with CHE regulatory frameworks.
• Membership with a relevant professional body such as the Disaster Management Institute of Southern Africa (DMISA) will be an advantage.
• Experience in distance or open learning environments will be an advantage.
